Judith Smith of Oakland, became a founding member of AXIS Dance Company in 1987. AXIS is a dance company of dancers with and without physical disabilities that has become internationally known for their superior artistry and their unparalleled education program. Through Judith Smith’s leadership, AXIS has created an impressive repertory that is respected in both the physically integrated and the contemporary dance world. AXIS performs and teaches dance locally in Alameda County and on tour throughout the United States. Annually, AXIS’ education programs serve over 11,000 Alameda County children and adults with and without disabilities through dance classes, youth performances and in-school residencies that educate them about dance, disability and collaboration.
